It's 1864 and Will Spooner is off with the Kansas volunteers fighting the Confederates. Back at home his wife Eliza tends to the farms and their two children while also lovingly piecing together a special Christmas quilt to send to Will to keep him warm this winter. As the war causes destruction and turmoil on the battlefields, the women back home have to deal with the fallout, and Eliza takes in a woman and her child with no other options. Leaning on her beloved quilting group, Eliza has to learn who to trust and how to firmly stand in her beliefs.
I loved the themes of identity in this book. We aren't always as people perceive us, and we have to craft our own stories. The female friendships were strong and endearing. I loved the journey of not just Eliza's character but some of the side characters as well as they all had to face the realities of the time together.
This book may have Christmas in the title, but it is not a very Christmasy book. It is rather a Civil War historical fiction novel that happens to have a portion set over Christmas.
