When I heard Meredith pitch this book on the Currently Reading Podcast (Season 5, Episode 2), I immediately went to my Libby app and thankfully could immediately check it out on audio. Then I proceeded to devour this book while wanting to hide under my covers and scream at it at the same time.
Most of the most popular serial killers in history are in the pre technology era. Because while we all know technology has its disadvantages, it has definite advantages at hindering criminals from getting away with their gruesome deeds. But Israel Keyes breaks the rule. He is a terrifying modern serial killer who killed an untold number of people between the late 90s to early 2010s. He is terrifying for several reasons. 1. He killed all across the country. 2. He led a fairly normal and unsuspecting life before finally being caught despite committing very brazen crimes. 3. He planned out his murders with horrifying detail. 4. He didn't just have one type of victim. 5. He studied other serial killers and learned from their techniques and mistakes... And I could go on, but you need to read this fabulously written book to get all the details.
I think the way that Callahan sets up the story immediately pulls you in and then how she doles out the rest of the details keeps you engaged and completely sucked into the story. I couldn't get enough and even though the subject matter is not for the faint of heart, I wanted to be listening at all times. The prosecutor on the Keyes case, as well as Keyes himself are wildly frustrating as people, but Callahan highlights all the information available to the public to give us as much of the story as we will probably ever be privy to.
Content warning: This book discusses rapes, violence, and brutal murders in detail.
