Rosalind Franklin is an outsider. At home she is the career minded one not interested in joining the family business or charitable pursuits. At work she is a woman in a man's field, and that has been made clear to her time and time again. But she loves science. It grounds her and makes sense. And when she is assigned to work on DNA, she knows she can find out its secrets despite having to continually prove herself in the boys club of scientific discovery.
She spends years taking X-ray photo after X-ray photo, following the science, and she is so close to getting the full picture of the shape of DNA. And when that double helix structure appears as clear as day in front of her, she isn't ready for the fight that lies ahead.
I thought this book was fascinating as it glides through Rosalind's timeline. At first I was concerned about the time span of this book, but Benedict handles the story and timeline with such skill that you are whisked away on this journey of DNA discovery. I love how this book highlights a true female hero in STEM who for so long did not get the recognition she was due.
This does not fit into my usual preference of a plot driven novel, as it is largely character driven. But the subject matter was interesting and I discussed this one with my book club which added to my experience.
