One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer
written by: Michelle McNamara
narrated by: Gabra Zackman
rating: really liked
Michelle McNamara was a true crime journalist who was determined to nab the man she dubbed "The Golden State Killer." She dove deep into the case and combed through police reports, interviewed witnesses. participated in online forums, and managed to ingratiate herself with the investigators.
Half done with the book at the time of her death, her husband made sure her that this book was completed based on her notes and articles to show the full story of the investigation that consumed Michelle. And many believe Michelle bringing this case to the forefront of the public's attention is what ultimately led to the arrest of the culprit.
While I think this book is excellently done, I read it in the midst of a true crime spree and it wasn't was consuming of a reading experience for me as some other books (American Predator and The Stranger Beside Me). I think the choppiness of the writing because a large part of this book was done posthumously took me out of the narrative and had me thinking of Michelle and her story as much as the true crime story. All that being said, this is still excellent true crime writing and fascinating if you a fan of the genre.
