Following Dorothea Lange's life from her arrival in 1918 in San Francisco to the 1960s when she passed away. It covers her life as a struggling artist. a portrait photographer, a wife, mother, and eventually as a photojournalist which is probably what the public knows her best for.
I really enjoyed thinking through the many facets of Dorothea Lange's life and so much of the times she lived through have applicable lessons for the times we are currently living in.
This was my IRL book club's pick for our June book and it led to some great discussions about parenthood, marriage, the importance of a career, a woman's role, the government's role, the power of photography and people's stories, and the significance of art. We really got to run the gamut.
If you like historical fiction about real complex people, this one would be a great choice for you.
