The Invention of Wings- Review

by: Sue Monk Kidd narrated by: Jenna Lamia and Adepero Oduye rating: really liked

Based on the real life Grimke sisters who were icons in the abolition and women's rights movements, this story follows Sarah Grimke and one of her family's slaves, Handful, over 35 years. From when Sarah is gifted Handful for her 11th birthday, to when their lives are radically different due to the choices each of them make many years later. The narrators of this audiobook really brought these characters to life, and I listened to most of this book while I was in Charleston on vacation and seeing the streets and homes there really made this book so much more of a multifaceted experience for me. The two main characters like I mentioned are such well fleshed out characters, but some of the side characters were also interesting female characters that helped add more dimension to the story.

If you are looking for an immersive historical fiction reading experience, look no further. Just know, it is a heavier read due to the time and location it is set in.

Content Warning: This book is set largely on a slave holding plantation in the South. This book does not shy away from some of the rougher treatments slaves would have received at that time.

Also, I am always intrigued by the differences in covers as books are published in other countries and other languages. Which book cover below is your favorite? I like the UK (1) cover and the Danish cover.
