Nancy Drew #5, The Secret at Shadow Ranch- Review

Updated: Oct 5, 2021

by: Carolyn Keene

rating: really liked

The first book in the series where Nancy goes beyond the reaches of her hometown of River Heights. I enjoyed the treasure hunting aspect of this one and the terrible grasp that the writer had on rodeos (I really chuckled at some of that content). Nancy once more proves herself to be a problem solver and outside the box thinker. I appreciate that she solves this one largely on her own with minimal help from Bess and George who are introduced for the first time in this book. The wrap up at the end of this one was VERY short. Nancy is still a hostage 3 pages before the end. I also think that it is time to revise this text again to change the language surrounding the Native American aspects of this book. Also the shaming of Bess for enjoying good food has got to go too.

If you want to join in a Nancy Drew Book-club, I run the #NancyDrewBookCrew over on my Instagram where we are reading all the books in order. You can come participate in the discussion there!
